Global Treasures STORKYRKAN Stockholm, Sweden

The elegant tower of Storkyrkan Cathedral rises majestically above Gamla Stan, the old and historic district of Sweden's capital city of Stockholm. Storkyrkan, which means, 'the great church', is the oldest church in the Swedish metropolis.

The history of Stockholm's cathedral, that combines both Gothic as well as Baroque design, is closely associated with the Swedish royal family. With the exception of King Gustav The Fifth, each of Sweden's kings has been crowned here due to the ideal setting offered by this glorious building.

Storkyrkan was not only important to Sweden for its historic architecture and remarkable works of art, it was also of much religious significance as it was from here that Swedish reformer, Olaus Petri, began to spread the Lutheran message across Sweden during the first half of the 16th century.

The cathedral also contains the oldest remaining historical portrayal of Stockholm and a strange phenomenon of light that once occurred in this city was also the subject of this painting that dates back to 1535.

Storkyrkan is a religious building of much import with regard to the development of the clerical world as well as to the history of Sweden.

Global Treasures KUNGLIGA SLOTTET Swedish Royal Palace Swed

Kungliga Slottet is a majestic royal castle that is located on the highest point of the island of Stadsholmen in the middle of the attractive historical old town of Stockholm known as Gamla Stan. The castle became an official royal residence when Swedish monarch, King Adolf Fredrik, resided there.

With its 608 rooms the castle is considered to be one of the greatest royal residences in the world and home to the Swedish crown jewels.

The design of the Royal castle and its splendid facade was created by the architect, Nicodemus Tessin The Younger. His father, Nicodemus The Elder, built the Tre Kronor Castle at the end of the 17th century which was named after the three crowns that are depicted in the Swedish coat of arms. In 1697 a devastating fire swept through Stockholm and also the Tre Kronor Castle. Shortly after the fire, the castle of Kungliga Slottet, designed in Italian Baroque style, rose up from the ruins of Tre Kronor Castle.

For more than 250 years the cityscape of Sweden's capital of Stockholm would not have been complete without the splendour of Kungliga Slottet.

STOCKHOLM

Stockholm is a city that floats on water: the 'Venice Of The North' was built on fourteen islands.

Gamla Stan, or 'Old Town', is the name of the city's three central islands that are linked by numerous bridges. Its ambience is that of the Middle Ages and small and mysterious alleys and beautiful buildings that date back to the 7th century characterise the life of the traders who once lived there.

The old town's most dominant building is the royal castle of Kunglia Slottet. Larger than London's Buckingham Palace it contains six hundred and eight rooms.

The Stadshuset is one of the city's landmarks and was designed in Medieval style and with a tower that is almost 106 metres tall. The most important artists of the time were engaged in the creation of the Blue Hall in which the Noble Prize ceremony now takes place each year.

Those who appreciate museums will not be disappointed by Stockholm as it boasts more than fifty! The National Museum located on the Strömmen Canal contains countless works of art. Due to the passion for art of various of Sweden's royal family and also generous public donations, the museum has a truly outstanding collection of French paintings that date back to the 18th century.

Six kilometres south of Stockholm is a cemetery that has been designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Skogskyrkogarden, the final resting place for many of Stockholm's past inhabitants and also some of its most famous, including Greta Garbo. This extraordinary complex took thirty years to build and is unique in the world.

Since 1998 this centuries-old Hanse city has also been the cultural capital of Europe. This city of the Vikings is a true architectural gem!
